Initiative Overview

Play Safe, Stay Safe

Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under. Each year more then 90,000 children are permanently disabled, and more than 6.6 million are treated in hospital emergency rooms. Although much is being done by government, corporations, organizations and individuals to reduce the frequency of preventable accidents, the information is not reaching all families. Minority and economically disadvantaged children are 1.5 times more likely to suffer the negative effects of accidental injury.

Safety Boxes
WQPT is providing safety boxes, funded by the ALCOA Foundation, to early childhood programs throughout our broadcast area. Called Play Safe, Stay Safe, the boxes are filled with activity ideas, books and games on fire, wheel and poison safety for kids in preschool and early elementary programs as well as information to send home to parents.

Kids will also enjoy the DVD’s from Danger Rangers and Seemore’s Playhouse, two PBS programs that teach children good safety habits and tips through storytelling and music.

WQPT is partnering with the Child Abuse Council and the American Red Cross on the project, and their staff will be offering Play Safe, Stay Safe workshops throughout the community.

If you would like to participate in a safety training or borrow a box for your own classroom activities, please contact Kathy Graver at the Child Abuse Council (309-764-7017 or kathyg@childabuseqc.org) or Kim Crosby at the American Red Cross of the Quad Cities (309-743-2166 or crosbyk@usa.redcross.org).
